As I write this, my dad is entering his first week of retirement. This seems so weird to me since everyone thinks of my dad as “NAPA Mark”. I always thought of my dad as being forever young and tough. Retirement seems like something “old people” do, and even now, I don’t think of my dad as old – evn though he was already 40something at my earliest memories of him. I guess it all just seems so odd for me to think about. It also is a bit worrisome to think about what COULD become of him based on other retirement stories I have heard. However, I am pretty sure he will be just fine. Cheers to you dad! Here is the skinny…

Christmas is not one of my more favorite holidays. Last year I was stuck in a snowy wasteland without cigarettes fending off panic attacts over my tailbone surgery the next day. The year before I was home alone trying to figure out what to do about my truck being stolen then night before. Prior to that, I mostly pretended Christmas was just another day since my family didn’t get together on the 25th since my mom always worked.

Today, I had a bit of a realization of how tough the times are.

We live in an imaginary world based on hype. The “most important” things seems manufactured. The generation that grew up on Mr. Rogers is now living in the land of make-believe and suffering the consequences. The economy is failing yet gas is the cheapest it has been in over a year. The dow hit a record single day jump after freefalling the last few days. Banks are using imaginary money. People are buying imaginary things using plastic promises. Credit scores and terrorist watch lists are more important than criminal histories.

Doing anything Friday night? Venture into downtown Minneapolis to drink, dance, listen to some awesome djs, and watch me paint live at the Shelter on the 4th floor above Barfly. Word on the street is the DEVIOUSone is a killer dj so get your groove on Friday night. I have a crazy plan which will result in one of my biggest paintings yet, so if you dug my piece at Convergence last Summer, you’ll love this one!

I would otherwise say “this is New York’s problem”, but a grant to the St. Paul/Minneapolis Police Department for the RNC enabled them to buy numerous surveillance cameras for downtown areas. I wonder what will happen to those now that the RNC is over and people elsewhere resume forgetting the Twin Cities exist? I am not a fan.

I have not written lately about my adventures in the lizard bricks. That doesn’t mean I have not been working on them. However, today I think I came to the realization that I need to start over. The key issue is that the limbs keep breaking off, even with the concrete. This is mostly due to the joints being to narrow compared to the depth of the bricks. This would be fine in application since the interlocking nature of the bricks will displace the weight of a vehicle, etc. However, the breakage occurs when removing the bricks from the mold.

I pose the question, “who doesn’t want Sarah Palin in the VP Office more – Democrats or Republicans?” After listening to her speech at the RNC just now, you have to wonder. She pointed out how she wants to go after the big oil companies, (of which the government gets a lot of money from). She also made a point to note how she cut costs in her own offices by laying off her personal driver and selling the governer’s personal jet (which was originally purchased by the previous Republican governer). This isn’t very “Rebublican” of her, unless you mean Ron Paul style “Rebublican”.

I went to the gas station earlier this evening and parked next to a police squad car. When I got out, I heard a series of loud barks from the car and a dark figure jumping about in the back seat. I figure it was a dog part of the canine squad, but I didn’t see the “K-9 Unit” plates. I didn’t bother taking a closer look to investigate since I didn’t want the cop to walk out and wonder why I was staring into his car… that might look bad.
