Don’t Say “Klingon” and “Honor” in a humorous fashion together

Don’t Say “Klingon” and “Honor” in a humorous fashion together

I have been reading some AOL news this morning since this is day two of their bait and switch of the Netscape’s Social News Network. Me bitter? Na – I’m working on a post how switching brands might have been a great thing for the project.

Propeller Launched!

Quoting coworker Richard Klein “I posted earlier there were some big changes coming for the Netscape website. Well, this morning the “Social News Experience” moved to its new home at Propeller.com and Netscape.com became a traditional portal. The official announcement is on the Netscape blog. Check out the announcement and look for great things to come.”

A Toast to the Past

A Toast to the Past

I was talking last night over IM with a girl I went out for drinks with last week. After talking about music and art interests, she let on that she used to be goth. I found it hilarious because she doesn’t look it now. Now she works in a cube as a fashion designer for a major local outfit and when we went out for drinks she was still wearing her conservative work attire. So, the vision of a tattooed/pierced angsty teen wasn’t the first thing that comes to mind when I saw her.

NIN/Bauhaus Vids and The War on the Future

Here are some vids I found over the weekend…. maybe if I watched less videos, I would actually write stuff in my free time….

Storing Social Security Numbers in Rails…

For the forth coming store for Adamantine Arts, artists will be able to sell  print, originals, etc via our site. Since this is an affiliate program of sorts, we need to keep track of SSN/EIN and more for tax purposes (CC and other billing info is kept with PayPal – I’ll let them worry about their security). So with all the reports of laptops stolen containing spreadsheets of plain social security numbers, I figure I better prevent that issue right away. The encryption needs to be true encryption (not 1 way hashing). I scoured the net last night for implementations to use with Ruby/Rails. I mostly found half educated discussions about how encryption is hackable and other non-solution type responses. God Bless the ability of people to clog Google’s results with keyword injected garbage. Anyway, this morning I found the below article at the Stuff and Things blog. It is a clear and straight forward guide for using openSSL to do 2-way encryption to encode your data. The only thing left out for my situation was getting this to work with active records. However, I skipped the whole acts_as_secure overhead and just wrote some wrappers I tossed into my application_controller.rb file. Bam. Secure.

BRAINS!

“Sure, she might think it’s deranged, but she won’t think twice after I suck out her brains.” Man I love Voltaire.

Netscape Slip-Up Reveals the Propeller Within

I was just checking out Netscape when I realized that the site

Put on your Propeller Hats

After a long awaited head nod from AOL legal, Netscape officially has a new name/home. – Propeller. From the official Netscape blog post :

Doll Skin/Evangellion Vid

While working tonite, the Toadies song “Doll Skin” came on… which got me a bit nostalgic. I found this vid on you tube… which also got me a bit nostalgic. I watched the entire Evangellion series with my good bud Jin a few years ago and at the very least both the song and that series remind me of happier less complicated times… *tear*

Franklin Holiday Station 9/10:8pm – I was ran over for you!

I was getting a beverage at the Gas Station tonite and was tapped by some crazy drivers while I was checking a girl out… Nichole told me to post a “I saw you” on craigs list. I feel lame, but eh.
